Session Descriptions
Session 1
Evaluations: Effective Versus Highly Effective: What it means to educators now. The stakes have changed again with the new Teacher Appreciation Grant. This year's evaluation session will focus on those changes. We will give you specific points that you can bring to the discussion table regarding evaluation. There will be a look at walk throughs and how they differ from short or long observations. The RISE Teacher Effectiveness Rubric competencies will be dissected for the subtle differences between effective and highly effective. You will receive the Evaluation manual that has multiple resources for each competency, alternatives to improvement plans, and how to write a rebuttal. (Sandy Steele and Veronica Hobbs)
Developing Quality Discussion: This session will walk you through the nuts and bolts of ensuring that your local is participating in effective discussion. (Please note: Indiana law on discussion only applies to teachers) (Chris Campbell and Chad Hunter)
Making Meetings Worth your Time: How do you make your meetings something that your officers & reps want to come to? How do you hold meetings that are productive and don’t turn into complaint sessions? What should the agenda look like? How long should it be? Which decisions require a motion? Who can vote? Come to this session to get all these questions answered & more! (Shane Grimes and Scott Priest)
Get Your Dues Dollars Back: The number one reason people give for not joining the Association: MONEY! This session will help you show those non-joiners as well as your current members on how to save money with an ISTA/NEA membership. Membership has its privileges! (Rob Belcher, Mark Lichtenberg, and Jackie Miller)

It would be helpful to bring your loan information, your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your last tax return, & a laptop or tablet. Using a tool you can explore savings for which you might qualify. True Colors: The True Colors methodology provides you with an understanding of what makes you and others feel successful – which is the gateway to effective communications. Join us to learn more about your core motivations, needs and behaviors and the impact they have on your ability to communicate effectively with others in both personal and professional relationships. DND- Student Loan Forgiveness: Do you have Federal Student Loans? Were the Loans after 1998? Would you like to save money? This session is an overview of programs to lessen student debt. It would be helpful to bring your loan information, your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from your last tax return, & a laptop or tablet. Using a tool you can explore savings for which you might qualify. School Board: School board elections and referendums are becoming more important because of the changes in the law over the past years. Locals have to rely on the school boards to work with them through administrative guidance and procedures and are becoming reliant on referendums to raise money at the local level due to the impact of property tax caps. This session will review the basic elements of a running a successful school board race and referendum and how to work with school boards after you have supportive members elected. (Roni Embry, Kim Fidler, Ann Wilkins, and Keith Clock)

Engaging Early Career Educators: Has your association enrolled every new educator that works in your corporation? If not, attend this session to learn ways to engage the early career educators. We will explore ideas for making room in the association for them. (Angela Miller and Matt Elder)
Role of the AR: The WHO, HOW, WHAT, & WHY of being an Association Rep. Being an effective and knowledgeable Association Rep is very important. Knowing WHO you are expected to represent, HOW you should represent them, when do you represent them, WHAT you should be doing to provide appropriate representation, and WHY that representation is necessary will be discussed. Participants will be provided with the tools to be an effective AR. A Q&A session will be included so bring your questions along. (Janet Abrams and Steve Wynn)
